I may be able to clarify a few things about the 169 and 167 As several posters have mentioned, the 167 is the most recent version of the Capella series and it incorporates all of the changes that we have put into the boats over the past several years The 169 is the original Capella hull and as such is is VERY different from the 167

The Capella has, to me, more secondary and primary stability, with a more progressive edge The Shadow is easier to get on edge, and the secondary firms up very quickly once on edge The cockpit on the Capella is quite a bit bigger, and the opening uses a large skirt, the Shadow a medium The Shadow feels more secure and faster downwind

The Capella 161 hull profile across the cockpit area is going to be more similar to the 167 The 163 and the 173 have more of a shallow v hull The more rounded and the more v’d hull are going to feel different, obviously

The Capella 163 fit well, I think it has a little less room in the cockpit than the Tempest That concerns me a little in that I like to paddle into December, with a drysuit and fleece pants, but I think it would still be do-able I think there is a little less room in the foot box of the Capella than the Tempest

The Capella was introduced in 1996 as a plastic kayak These first RM Capellas had square hatch covers, so that should be easy to tell The 169 was the original composite, and then they modified the hull some and made multiple sizes in both plastic and composite

Capella 160 RM I have an ‘05 model and I really like it The poly is 1st rate and it rolls very well The cockpit may be a bit large for smaller paddlers (I’m 5’ 11", 184 lbs , and can easily plop in and pull my legs in) Definitely give the other boats a try Good luck! Don

Can anyone fill me in on the main differences between the older P H Capella RMs and the new ones? There are several older ones (used) for sale in area and they appear very similar to the current models except they only have 2 hatches bulkheads rather than 3 The hatch covers also are squarish with rounded covers rather than round or oval I am mainly concerned about whether the older Capellas
