I neglected to mention those – any file stored in the "Nintendo 3DS" folder is encrypted and if you have a sav file copied from someone else's SD card, it will be completely useless to you (While it is possible to decrypt a sav file without unpacking it like Checkpoint does, this is very atypical and no one distributes sav files this way )

Retroarch uses srm for saveram, and state for savestates sav is not really a standardized extension, so we cannot tell you anything without knowing specifically what you're using that's looking for a sav file Most likely the sav is the same format as srm and just renamed, with no "conversion" necessary beyond just changing the extension
