- Quality of Fish at PetSmart and PetCo?
My Petsmart is hit and miss and it depends wholeheartedly on the type of fish you're buying from them Case in Point: I have 10 Columbian Tetra 's all bought from Petsmart They are some of the healthiest fish I've ever seen and a couple of them are pushing three inches, far beyond the 2 to 2 1 2" max

Petsmart on the other hand, is pretty much fully operated by the suits as far as what they do and don't sell, but going back to fish meds again, Petsmart has a much better selection to pick from They look pretty similar on the outside, but that little bit of employee influence can make or break a store

I have the 48" 75 gallon Marineland "Majesty" Ensemble (tank stand LED combo) I bought on sale at Petsmart for $249 It is basically a shorter 4ft version of the same 6ft model you're looking at While the construction was better than the other Petsmart stands and it used real wood (no melamine or MDF), I still used 2×4's to firm up the corner

I remember reading that the chain stores (at least Petco and Petsmart) aren't allowed to buy fish from anywhere but their large scale breeders It's in the rules that they can't Some Petcos will however take fish and put them in a special "free adoption" tank I agree, your best bet is small mom-and-pop LFS stores

Right now Petsmart is having very attractive prices on ensemble set ups There was one under discussion last week 125 gallon plus stand, hood with lights (can't remember about the filter) for a little over $400 00

On the other hand, Petco, Petsmart etc use the same suppliers for their stores This is why usually fish are a little more pricey at LFS or indivudually owned stores than chain stores If petco is selling guppies for $2 each, you know they most likely paid 10 cents for that fish and if they pay 10 cents for it, I highly doubt that is a good
